Here and now

You will wake up, Sunday morning.

You'll stretch, get the life back into your legs so they'll pay attention to you. You might go to the shower first or drink something first, but at some point, you'll click on the computer.

And you'll get this message in a bottle, sent in the wee hours of last night, while you slept peacefully. I am typing this in your past, my now, with the desklight softly buzzing, and my fingers clicking on the keys.

You are there, and I am here. There might be space between us, but really, there isn't. Really.

I am there, and you are here.

I am writing this now, you'll read it then. There might be time between us, too. But really there isn't.

Really.

You are here now, and I am there, then.

Here and now, we exist, together. There and then, we'll exist, too.

Really.

And that makes me smile.

How do I know?

When the warped, wonderful dance joint I've gone to forever seems like a new place with her,
and stale without her,
I know.

When dull, dry concrete rooftops bitten by winter's cry
breathe warmth under worn black leather because there I first paused, watching her,
I know.

When the number of numbing, heavy footfalls doubles,
but seems light as air when her hand is in mine,
I know.

When I easily put aside the raw, momentary smiles of manhood
because she replaces them with her voice, her heart, and her touch,
I know.

When the ache of past broken panes of glass and snapped harpstrings
finally fail to keep me, restless and awake
I know.

When childish songs ring true,
when foolish plays harbor a surprising depth,
when strung-together moments taste like hours
and hours are not enough
I know.

Why she asks me in a voice I hold onto like the rope that brings me ashore in the gale of my life
how I know for sure that I love her...

I know.

web 2.0

Paul Graham says...

Web 2.0 means using the web as it was meant to be used, and Google does. That's their secret. They're sailing with the wind, instead of sitting becalmed praying for a business model, like the print media, or trying to tack upwind by suing their customers, like Microsoft and the record labels. [7]

Google doesn't try to force things to happen their way. They try to figure out what's going to happen, and arrange to be standing there when it does.

My goodness. : )

Live, or Memorex?

I am finding myself increasingly interested in alternate reality games ( ARGs ). This is a game that uses the real world as the gameboard, with clues and actions being all present in real time, in real life. You might have to go to a certain website or a certain address and do something, talk to someone, or whatever. I played a kind of lame-but-still-interesting version of this kind of game at GenCon last year... and now I'm interested in making one go.

It would bring into one tight little package several areas of interest I have: viral flow of information across social networks, game design, and writing in particular.

I have an idea for a sort of starter-game. We'll see what I can come up with.

There are companies that do this, for money. This job has officially made it onto my Dream Jobs List.

; )

Here's a story from Wired that discusses one such ARG.

four weeks

Today was the day I told her.

I knew much earlier, but today, four weeks afterwards, I spoke the words.

I am taking care, lately, not to over-reach myself with words. With work, school, friends, or her.

But I am certain. And I told her so.
