Do you work in a corporate environment?
Well... odds are it ain't Google or Sun or someplace cool. Most of the people working in cube farms work in environments that have all the pazazz ( yes, that's a word ) of the workspace in Fire Control on the Death Star where the guy who flipped a lever and helped destroy Alderan after jumping out of the way of the energy beam sat.
Do you think they let him wear Hawaiin shirts on Friday?
Anyway... besides being sticklers for manners of dress, corporate environments also have the annoying tendency to sap the soul. A strick ( almost fanatical ) devotion to standards, Best Practices and the status quo. Not rocking the boat, or doing so in silly ways ( Listen up people.. we're going to make Accounts Receivable -fun- again!" ) and so on.
Lots of times, when you try and spice things up- introduce a bit of innovation or some belly-fire into the mix, it's not met with wide smiles.
I imagine on the Death Star, if that one dude ( in Fire Control, who ducked out of the way when the beam to destroy Alderan whoooshed by ) were to try and change someone's thinking about his workplace, his manager would have paused from replacing that guy only long enough to first push him into the beam, to be vaporized, and leave a nice tidy workspace for his replacement.
Anyway... here's a good blog entry about effecting real change in the corporate environment.
Yes, an answer to your prayers, I know.
Allah be praised.
