Not so cold anymore

Day 1
Lihue, Kauai
81 degrees F
2048 HST

Came feet dry at 1430 local time at HNL, and was perspiring inside 5 minutes after getting off the plane. I humped about a quarter mile to the wikiwiki shuttle, which takes you to the other end of HNL where the interisland flights take off.

I had time on my hands... my flight for LIH was leaving at 1700... a little ove two hours. Blah. So I walked up to the desk, and as easily as I would have boarded a bus, I got on an earlier flight. No ID needed. Here's your boarding pass, Mr Simon.

I love Hawaii.

So a half an hour later, I'm on the Garden Island, Kauai, just outside LIH. I have an idiot problem. the smallest thing I have in my wallet as far as monetary instruments go is a five dollar bill... and I need to call my buddy to come pick me up. I am 2 hours early, and I can't hump it to his place.

Well, I could... but that would just be silly.

So I rumage and manage through sheer force of will to make the requisite .50 cents appear. And of course no one is home at his place... turns out he was surfing.

Sooooooo I do the local thing, turn to the first pick-up truck full of local-looking people throwing their shit in the bed and say "Hey.... you guys going anywhere near tthe far side of Lihue, by chance?"

I hitched to my buddy's place. Still nobody home, and it was open. I walked in and made myself at home. Took off my shoes and my undershirt, and exhaled for what felt like the first time in a week.

Back. : )

More tomorrow.
